The UNA women’s basketball team—coming off a loss to Delta State 57-41 Saturday—will travel to Huntsville to face the Lady Chargers in Spragins Hall Feb. 25.

The Lions fell to the Chargers in Flowers Hall Jan. 28 60-44 after being down 30 and rallied back with a trio of threes from senior guard Jessi Smith. Smith led the team in scoring and said for this game playing with confidence and limiting the turnover ratio will be two key factors in securing the win against UAH.

“We have to play with confidence, and I need to be the leader I know I can be,” Smith said. “I need to help my team to play with poise and compete because I feel like we’ve lacked that the first time we play them.”

UNA managed 22 turnovers to UAH’s 14. Also, the Chargers managed to turn UNA’s errors into points, grabbing 28 points off turnovers to UNA’s 16.

“We need to take this week and focus on us; it’s not about them,” Smith said. “It’s about us coming together as a team and all playing with the same mindset, working toward one goal … winning.”

Head coach Terry Fowler said the game plan at Spragins Hall will deal with the pressure of the press and the crowd UAH will bring.

“Number one, we have to make sure we handle the press, which we did a good job of handling the press at our place,” Fowler said. “It was the half court trap that gave us problems. We’re going to have to keep the turnovers down and handle the crowd as well.”

Fowler said the post game will be pivotal in the search for the final regular season win.

“We have to throw it inside against them because they’re not a very big basketball team; we’ve just got to take this time to continue to get better and improve and score around the basket better than we have so far this year,” he said. “We’ve played well the past 10 ball games and been able to compete. We’ve got to continue that on and go down to Niceville, and you never know what can happen there.”

UNA women will tip at Spragins Hall on the campus of UAH 5 p.m. Feb. 29, followed by the men at 7 p.m.
