Lions’ offense gets in gear in win against Glenville State

Senior defensive back Janoris Jenkins prepares to make a player miss during his 87-yard punt return for a touchdown vs. Glenville State.

The Lions’ offense came alive in the 48-21 rout of Glenville State, resulting in their second win of the season Saturday night at Braly Stadium.

The Lions’ (2-0) offense was improved from last week’s game against Central Oklahoma, in which the offense had five turnovers for the game in the new offensive scheme. The defense, however, did give up almost 400 yards of offense and was on the field for 36 minutes.

“We are a 2-0 football team and we still need a lot of improvement,” said Head Coach Terry Bowden. “I felt better about our defense in the first game, and this game I felt better about our offense and not our defense.”

The defense for the Lions was in their own territory for most of the night, but managed to only give up 21 points. The Lions defense could not get off the field and was dominated in time of possession with the Pioneers having 36:04 to the Lions’ 23:56.

“Defensively, we just came out flat and we couldn’t get them off the field,” Bowden said. “We just didn’t come to play on that side of the ball and we need to get better.”

Quarterback Lee Chapple struggled in the opening game against Central Oklahoma by throwing three interceptions, but was much improved this week. Chapple completed 28 of 39 passes, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns.

“He was much more relaxed this week in the way he ran the offense and made a lot of good throws for us,” Bowden said. “I think it shows how good he can be.”

The running game took a big drop in numbers from last week’s game as the team went from 232 yards to 80 yards of total rushing yards.

“Just like last year, they were determined to put one more in the box and we decided to put the ball in the air and they couldn’t stop it,” Bowden said.

Leading rusher from last week Antwan Ivey, who had 143 yards rushing and 3 TDs, only had one carry for three yards. He did manage to have two receptions for 30 yards and two TDs.

The game was tied at 7-7 in the second quarter but UNA gained a 21-7 advantage by the half. The Lions extended their lead to 34-7 before swapping scores with Glenville State during the last quarter and a half.

The Lions jumped on the board first with a 11-yard touchdown from Chapple to Cameron Wade. The Pioneers on the following possession marched the ball 80 yards for the score, tying the game up at the 13:38 mark in the second quarter.

The Lions then added two more scores before the end of the half with a one-yard touchdown run by Chris Coffey and a 26-yard pass to Tristan Purifoy to take a 21-7 lead into the third quarter.

The Lions came out strong to start the second half, scoring an 8-yard pass to Ivey followed by a 87-yard kick-off return by Janoris Jenkins, giving the Lions a 34-7 lead. The Pioneers got a score at the 2:23 mark, making it a 34-14 score going into the fourth.

The Lions started the quarter with another touchdown from Chapple, his fourth of the game, to Mo Milliam for 12-yards making it 41-14. The Pioneers then got a score which was set up by an interception from backup quarterback Chris Alexander, making it 41-21.

The Lions then scored the final points of the game with a 14-yard completion from Alexander to Ivey making it the final score of 48-21.

The Lions will travel next week to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas in a battle of top-five teams as UNA (No. 5) will take on Abilene Christian (No. 3) with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
