From intro to end, Russell Brand makes ‘Arthur’

Russell Brand as Arthur and Luis Guzman as Bitterman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ romantic comedy “Arthur.”

I absolutely hate it when two promising movies come out on the same day. “Arthur” and “Your Highness” are the cases in point. Danny McBride makes me giggle every time I see his face. So when I saw the trailer for “Your Highness,” I was extremely stoked.

Also, despite my extreme envy for having one of the hottest wives ever, I think Russell Brand is a fantastic actor as well. Plus I loved “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek.” Fortunately, I received a request to review “Arthur,” so I personally didn’t have to decide. I have to say, after watching the movie, I’m completely satisfied with that choice.

“Arthur” is a comedy film starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, Greta Gerwig and Nick Nolte. Brand assumes the role of Arthur Bach, a British playboy with the cognitive skills of a nine-year-old.

To Arthur, the purpose of life is to party Andrew W.K.-style 24/7, leaving his mentor nanny, Hobson (Mirren), to clean up after him. With his mother’s unlimited supply of money, he lives his life to the fullest. However, after being arrested for wrecking the “Batman Forever” style Batmobile, his mother gets pissed and finally puts her foot down.

She realizes that she won’t be around forever, and she needs someone responsible to take over her company after her passing. Because the company has been in the Bach name for generations, her only option is for Arthur to marry heiress Susan Johnson (Garner).

Johnson is his mother’s right hand of the company; she is intelligent and is an excellent businesswoman. Deep down, however, she is malicious and greedy. At first, Arthur refuses the proposal, however, when his mother threatens to cut him off, he, naturally, abides.

Like all movies, the plot thickens and we find Arthur falling in love with a poor tour guide named Naomi Quinn (Gerwig). Torn between love and riches, Arthur must learn to grow up and make the choice that will ultimately change his life forever.

I enjoyed this movie very much. I will admit that as far as comedy goes, I have definitely laughed harder watching other movies. However, this movie definitely made me smile from start to finish. Being a Batman fan, I fell in love with the movie’s intro.

Also, Luis Guzman has a minor role in the film. Like Danny McBride, Guzman just cracks me up every time he appears on camera. Overall, this movie is fantastic. Go see it.
