Musical more wicked than ‘Wicked’

On April 23, Broadway Theatre League will host the Broadway touring production of “Avenue Q” for two performances at the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall in Huntsville.

The 2003 original Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Also up for this prestigious honor was the musical “Wicked,” the overwhelmingly popular and extravagant portrayal of Gregory Maguire’s novel that tells the untold story of the witches of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

One would think that a musical that defeats such a celebrated show for this award would be a moving, important piece of dramaturgy. Instead, “Avenue Q” is an adult parody of “Sesame Street” that includes puppet sex, puppet nudity, a puppet Gary Coleman, puppet profanity, puppet racism and puppet schadenfreude.

The musical follows a recent Princeton graduate as he lives his life on Avenue Q, a fictional street in an “outer-outer borough” of New York City. The production’s celebrated score includes songs such as “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?” “If You Were Gay,” “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet is for Porn” and “You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want When You’re Makin’ Love.”

The raunchy adult comedy has kept Broadway audiences laughing for more than eight years since the original production opened off-Broadway in New York City.

Though the production may seem like a frivolous musical, the show’s storyline portrays real life situations and issues such as alcohol, sex, homosexuality and finances. The show addresses these serious issues in a funny and quite inappropriate manner that keeps the audience engaged and laughing.

Student tickets for “Avenue Q” may be purchased at the Von Braun Center Box Office in Downtown Huntsville. According to Broadway Theatre League, pricing exclusive to students will be $40 for orchestra two seating, $27 for lower balcony and orchestra three seating and $17 for upper balcony seating. Be sure to bring a student ID to the box office to be sure you can take advantage of this discount.
