Lions baseball sweeps Lambuth in weekend series

UNA junior infielder Michael Schmidt waits on a pitch from the opposing team’s pitcher in a game played earlier this year at Mike Lane Field. The Lions swept Lambuth in a three-game series this past weekend.

The UNA baseball team picked up a series sweep of Lambuth University this past weekend at home to keep their resume strong for the post season.

The UNA baseball team highlighted the weekend with an offensive eruption on Saturday, scoring 38 runs total and a dismal six errors on Sunday, but managing to hold on for the win, giving the Lions an overall record of 30-10.

“As a whole, the bats over the last four games have been tremendous, and we have been able to get a hold of the ball and be very productive,” said head coach Mike Keehn. “Our bunt execution was good this weekend to help move runners over, which allowed us to score some runs.”

In game one, Trey Mitchell picked up his ninth win of the season (9-2) and the 20th of his career, making him the fourth UNA starter in history to win 20 games for their career.

“Trey is very competitive and he has learned to make adjustments throughout his career, and has also learned how to get people out whenever he is not at his best,” Keehn said.

“He has been a great student athlete and someone great to have on our team for the past four years.”

Mitchell had plenty of run support in game one, as the offense scored 23 runs led by Dale Ricketts who was four-for-five with four RBIs, followed by Josh Cyr, who went two-for-three with a three-run home run and four RBIs.

Josh Carpenter and J.P. LaMunyon also pitched in with three hits each, and sophomore third-baseman Andrew Almon blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning.

In game two the offense continued their hot streak, as the Lions racked up 15 runs with plenty of run support for starter Johnny Hornbuckle (6-3) who got his third complete game of the season and 11th for the staff, the most since 2004, winning 15-1.

” Eleven complete games is by far the most complete games a staff has had that I have seen since I have been coaching, and it is very unusual to see,” Keehn said.

The Lions had nine extra base hits for the game, led by Jared Mothershed, who had a solo homer, and Jake Sloan, who hit a three-run home run to lead the charge.

In game three the Lions avoided a big hiccup to their post-season resume, as they went to the final out with two runners on and a hit to the warning track to close out Lambuth with a score of 7-6, highlighted by six errors by the Lions.

“Defensively, we played very poorly in the game, and that was why the game was so close, but in a long season, games like this will happen,” Keehn said.

“Hopefully Sunday’s game was a wakeup call, because that would have been disastrous if we didn’t hold on for the win.”

Casey Jones (3-2) got the win in a relief effort while Joel Sessions picked up his fifth save of the season. Cyr added a three-run homerun for his second homerun of the weekend, with seven RBIs total

The Lions will play their last home games of the season for a three-game series against West Alabama with one game Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. and a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
