Local college suspends all athletic programs

Northwest-Shoals Community College decided to indefinitely suspend all athletic programs offered by the institution Monday, March 21.

The school is facing cuts in funding, so the athletic programs were suspended in response to the loss of revenue.

“The whole reason why Northwest-Shoals suspended the athletics programs is a loss of funding,” said Trent Randolph, a public relations assistant for the university. “We have lost $350,000 dollars of funding do to the 3 percent proration passed down from the governor’s office on Feb. 28.”

The school has also cited a lack of stimulus money coming to the institution as another reason for the decision.

“We did not receive a lot of stimulus money for our budget, so we had to make cuts,” said Randolph. “Athletics programs were suspended indefinitely as a result of those cuts.”

The school played its games in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), in which it fielded five teams.
