At the beginning of the year, Cathy Cruz Marrero made headlines as she was caught on camera in a local mall texting and walking, before tumbling into a water fountain head first. The video went viral, receiving more than 300 million hits on YouTube.

New York State Sen. Carl Kruger wants to ban all handheld devices used while walking.

What do the students at UNA think about walking and texting?

“I walk into things that I usually wouldn’t walk into. For example, I remember walking into someone’s umbrella one time.” – Stephanie Perry, junior.

“I text with my phone right out in front of me so I don’t walk into things.” – Adams Aycock, junior

“I normally stop and text, but sometimes I type a few letters then look up, and keep on walking. Then if I hit someone I just say excuse me.” – Zach Conlon, sophomore

“It’s not totally distracting. Sometimes I run into things, but if you know where you’re going it’s a lot easier.” – Taylor Morgan, freshman

“I was walking with a fellow UNA student from the GUC and he got distracted while texting and fell down five stairs! It was hysterical.” – Cedric Walls, senior
