UNA alumnus in the running for Cartoon Network award

Pete Nelson, a 1998 UNA graduate and Leo the Lion mascot from 1994-1999, is one of four mascots from across the country who is up for Cartoon Network’s “Most Awesome Mascot” award.

Nelson, who works as “T-Rac” with the Tennessee Titans, is the only NFL mascot to be nominated and will join his competitors in Los Angeles Feb. 25 for the TV network’s “Hall of Game” awards ceremony.

Voter results will be revealed at the awards show, which will be hosted by professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.

Sorority to host spaghetti dinner for charity

The sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta will hold a spaghetti dinner Feb. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. to raise money for Diabetes Awareness and Cancer Research.

The third annual dinner, which brought in $1,700 last year, will take place at First Baptist Church in Florence and costs $5 for a dine-in or carry-out meal, according to UNA student Beth Parker, who works for the public relations committee.

Students can purchase tickets by contacting an Alpha Gamma Delta sister or at the door the night of the event.

Females urged to register for Diamond G.E.M.S. pageant

Young women between the ages of 9-18 are encouraged to register in the first annual Diamond G.E.M.S. pageant Feb. 25-26 at Muscle Shoals Library from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Juanica Baugh, professional speaker, lecturer, former Miss Talladega and co-CEO of Positive Empowerment Productions, is directing the pageant, which is devoted to instilling self-confidence in its contestants.

All contestants will receive a free trophy, T-shirt, program, certificate of participation, dinner, professional training and more.

Winners in each category will also receive cash prizes at the pageant.
