The UNA women’s basketball team used 14 three-pointers to defeat the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Feb.3.

The Lions had 12 different players enter the stats sheet in the point column led by senior forward Niala Harris and junior guard Dana Jackson along with one other that reached double digits in points. The UNA Lions are now 15-5 and still undefeated in the Gulf South Conference.

“We had nine different people make threes with three people in double digit points. It’s different people every night, and we were making the shots they were giving us,” Head Coach Terry Fowler said.

The three-point shot was the key to the whole game with Dana Jackson, Sanqueeta Meardith and Sequoyah Cliff all making three-point baskets to start off the game. With 8:35 remaining in the first half, the Lions jumped out to a 28-19 lead, but the advantage was wiped away as UAH got within three at the 6:19 mark of the first half. With an eight-point lead going into the closing seconds of the first half, junior forward Lacy Lewis drained a three-point basket as time expired giving the Lions a 43-29 lead at the half.

“The three Lacy made at the end of the half was the key in the game. It changed the momentum for us,” said Fowler.

The Lions started the second half right where they left off going on a 18-4 run led by Jackson, recording six of her 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

“Us being in the gym putting in lots of hours paid off for us tonight,” senior guard Dana Jackson said. The run ended any chance for the Chargers to make a comeback as the Lions distanced themselves to a 61-33 lead with 9:08 remaining in the game.

The Lions had a huge effort from the bench, recording 36 points as the Lions put away the Chargers for good, earning a 84-66 victory.

“Everyone stepped up and played well tonight. We knew they only had six or seven players, so we knew we had to wear them down,” said Fowler.

It was the Lions’ seventh-straight win, and it also kept them undefeated in the GSC East Division.

“We are excited about the winning streak and being No. 1 in GSC East, but we will come in tomorrow and work, and we will not focus on what’s in the rearview mirror, just look forward,” said Fowler.

The Lions will try to continue their dominance as they hit the road Saturday, Feb.12 against West Georgia at 6 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 17 against Lambuth at 1 p.m.
