Student magazine calls for literary, art submissions

LITERARY ARTS — Since 1956, UNA students have submitted their original literary and artistic works to “Lights and Shadows,” an award-winning publication that gives writers and artists the opportunity to get published.

Many

students may know about the on-campus literary magazine “Lights and

Shadows.” For those who don’t, it might be wise to pick up a copy

and flip through its pages to become familiar with UNA’s

award-winning publication of student-generated art and

literature.

Since

1956, the Department of English has collected artistic submissions

of everything from poetry to photography and published it in

“Lights and Shadows.”

welcomes a variety of artistic submissions and accepts work from

students of all academic majors.

“We

accept anything,” he said. “We’re willing to take a look at any

work anyone is willing to submit. We just want submissions. If

anybody has anything they want to submit, they can.”

Skaggs

said that most of the literature they publish is poetry and

fiction, but that “Lights and Shadows” will publish art and

photography as well.

<span style=

“font-size: 14pt;”>Students who have not had their works previously

published often use “Lights and Shadows” as a way to connect with

literary circles. Every year, the staff submits its publication to

the Southern Literary Festival and they have no shortage of

competitive wins.

<span style=

“font-size: 14pt;”>English major Judith Dacosta has always been

aware of “Lights and Shadows” and its award-winning reputation, but

has never submitted her works. This year, she is considering

submitting some of her song lyrics and other creative works to the

magazine.

“It is

a great opportunity to publish one’s thoughts in any form,” she

said. “[But] to have an outlet such as ‘Lights and Shadows’

accessible to UNA’s students can only help them to further [their]

career and confidence in the writing field.”

<span style=

“font-size: 14pt;”>Dacosta also believes that access to a

publication with such a large audience is an advantage for

unpublished students attending UNA’s relatively small

campus.

now, so students can submit their poetry, fiction, nonfiction,
