We all need, whether you want to admit it or not, more funk in our
flow and more soul in our step from time to
time.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=

Whether you need a tasteful, soulful way to say, “F*ck You!” to
that special someone, or are trying to hit your mark with a “Love
Gun,” or finally feeling “Satisfied,” it always pays to take a few
lessons from “The Lady Killer” by Cee-Lo Green.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
With a sultry, syncopated piano opening and dialogue reminiscent of
Barry White, Cee-Lo starts the album with the threat, “When it
comes to ladies, I have a license to kill.”
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
A kicking ’60s James Bond style theme takes over and resurfaces at
the end of the album with the dark howling in “Love Gun” and the
heavy supplication of “Please.”
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
In between, the album is an eclectic throwback to the funk and soul
produced by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and
Fire, just to name a few.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
The most memorable track is the powerhouse lead single entitled,
endearingly, “F*ck You!” Gospel-style piano and organ tracks, along
with punching backing vocals, a funky guitar riff, and Cee-Lo’s
soaring tenor, give you just the words to say as you dance out your
ex-lover’s door.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
“Satisfied” does exactly what its name implies with a gospel choir
harmony and Motown-style horn riffs, focusing subtly on a fat
baritone sax line.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
The bari sax also appears on another high point in the album, “Cry
Baby,” as Cee-Lo tries to dry some tears and not be, “a bad guy
now… Just like all the other ones.”
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
Another peak in the album, though rather different from most of the
other tracks, is the thick, disco-esque “Bright Lights Bigger City”
which celebrates the fever you get from Saturday night with a
pounding beat and a driving synth riff that will be sure to get
your feet off the floor.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
While all of the tracks on the album are tied together, each one is
musically unique in some way.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
Cee-Lo has created an album that can appeal to many people with its
themes of rejection (“F*ck You!” and “It’s OK”), longing and desire
(“Please” and “I Want You”), and satisfaction (“Satisfied”), while
employing a broad range of musical styles.
<p class="MsoNormal" style=
“text-align: justify; text-indent: 14.0pt; mso-line-height-alt: 11.3pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-autospace: none;”>
<span style=
“font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;”>
It will be interesting to see how he follows this album up, but for
now he has equipped Cupid with a whole new arsenal to hit his mark
with.
