The Women’s Center showed the film “One in Four” Nov. 17, which was
provided by Rape Response and created to raise awareness among men
about what rape actually is, the trauma it causes for victims and
what they can do to help prevent it. The title of the film comes
from the statistic that one out of every four college-aged women
will be a victim of rape.

The film begins with members of “One in Four” presenting statistics
and information about rape and its victims. This is followed by a
speech from a male police officer on the violence of rape. The film
is graphic about the dangers of rape and the consequences that its
victims suffer, while explaining the damage caused to the victim
during the rape and what is known as “second rape” when the victim
undergoes the rape trauma exam in the hospital.

Since the trauma of rape is presented through a male victim rather
than female, it is designed to become a conversation starter among
viewers.

“Women are more likely to report rape, because there’s a better
awareness among women than men. Men can’t visualize this happening
to them.” said Anna Lott, director of the Women’s
Center.

Conversations about the true definition of rape, awareness and
prevention are what the staff of the Women’s Center hoped to
accomplish by sharing this film.

“When defining rape, there are often gray areas people find
themselves in and aren’t sure if an action was rape or something
else. We are working to raise awareness and create better
understanding of those grey areas and ‘One in Four’ can help do
that for men,” said Megan Williams, a UNA student and the “One in
Four” coordinator for Rape Response.
