“Call of Duty: Black Ops”

does little to let hardcore shooter fans down. With the addition of

Wager matches, where players bet COD currency, and the inclusion of

a zombie mode like “World at War,” “Black Ops” put out a product

for all types of shooter fans.

We’re going to start with the

campaign. Most gamers don’t buy military first person shooter (FPS)

games for the campaign. This realm is left for games like

“Bioshock” and the “Fear” franchise. The campaign for “Black Ops”

starts off almost like a Bourne movie. The main character is in a

situation that is not desirable and it quickly gets the action

started during the Bay of Pigs operations in Cuba.

Players make their way

through Cold War battles from Cuba to Russia and also take part in

the Vietnam conflict. The campaign is like most “Call of Duty”

games—not very long, but this story is the best of the franchise.

It has everything necessary to make a compelling story: mystery,

suspense and lots of awesome gunplay.

The multiplayer, however, is

where it’s at. The customization goes deeper than any “Call of

Duty” before it. You can design your own player card emblem, edit

video footage from matches and upload them, and put face paint on

your character and even change the camo and reticle design and lens

color of weapons. Wager matches put a different spin on things.

Take the COD points you have earned and put your money where your

mouth is. The top three players in each match are “in the money”

and cash out. If you don’t make it in the top 3, you lose it

all.

This is a game that no

hardcore shooter fan should miss. I have a feeling gamers will be

on this for a long time, or at least until the next one. Overall, I

give “Black Ops” a 4.5 out of 5. There are some minor kinks with

the online that need to be ironed out, and of course there is no

such thing as a perfect game.
