Scholarships for English majors

The English Department is now offering more scholarship money for
undergraduate and graduate students majoring in English,
Professional Writing or Language Arts. Application deadlines for
each of the nine endowed scholarships vary, with dates ranging from
Dec. 1 to Dec. 6.

Applications are available in the English department office in
Willingham Hall and students can also apply online by clicking the
“Academics” tab on UNA’s homepage, following the links to the
English department, then clicking “Scholarships.”

Eligibility requirements are also listed under this category. Some
of the scholarships are open to all English-related majors, but
others apply to specific disciplines, such as Professional
Writing.

The total amount of funds available is expected to exceed $14,000.
According to English instructor Anita Garner, this is a much larger
amount than has been available in many previous years.

“I can remember years when we didn’t have much of anything coming
into the coffers,” she said. “Benefactors have been more generous
recently and more specific about what majors they want to donate
to.”
