Women’s basketball stays undefeated 7-0

North Alabama women’s basketball is 7-0 for its first Division I season. They recently defeated Southeast Missouri and Western Carolina in the NJIT Classic in Newark, N.J.

Its first game of the weekend Nov. 24 was against Southeast Missouri ending in a 80-67 victory. This game put UNA at a 6-0 record and the RedHawks at 1-4.

North Alabama took the lead at the end of the first quarter 18-17. Southeast Missouri retaliated early in the second quarter with six consecutive points. The game remained close until senior guard Savannah Stults achieved a three-point play to put the Lions ahead 25-23 with 5:23 remaining. From there, UNA scored 13 unanswered points before the Redhawks could score again, ending the half 38-24.

The Lions kept up their assault in the third quarter scoring 22 points compared to SEMO’s 16, securing their lead 64-42. The Redhawks attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter but could not compete.

Western Carolina met the same fate, losing 89-66. They tailed closely through the first quarter, keeping pace with UNA 22-18. However, midway through the second quarter the Lions began a progressive assault. They scored 26 points compared to Western Carolina’s 10. The third quarter yielded almost identical results as the first, with UNA scoring 22 again and Western Carolina scoring 19.

Both teams scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, finalizing the score and securing the win for North Alabama. That win placed the the Lions at a 7-0 record.

They first defeated Vanderbilt 74-71 in their division debut. They followed that victory with a 98-57 victory over Lane and a win over Blue Mountain 70-42. Stillman fell 99-43 along with Alabama State 68-42.

The Lions play again Dec. 2 at Xavier in Ohio.
