Unpack The Pride to affect campus, community traffic
August 16, 2018
As students prepare to move into on-campus housing, the UNA Police Department has adjusted parking and roadways to ensure move-in day is more efficient.
The parking lot in front of Rivers and Rice hall will be unavailable until the end of the move-in, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m.
UNA police recommend students to use the parking lot behind Guillot University Center and parking lot OO, which is next to the infirmary, until the move-in ends.
University Police Chief Kevin Gillilan said the parking deck will be available to students through Aug. 15 and should be avoided Aug. 16-18 for move-in traffic.
Gillilan encourages faculty and staff to park in the Harrison Plaza parking lot, in front of the Wendell W. Gunn University Commons building, during business hours Aug. 16-17 to maximize the flow of traffic on Pine Street.
Gillilan recommends Kilby School families allow for additional time during UNA move-in days. Families should use the through traffic lanes in their pickup schedules Aug. 16-17.
Traffic headed northbound should use the right lane for check-in and the left lane for through traffic and volunteer parking. Traffic headed southbound should use the left lane for check-in and right lane for through traffic.
Director of Housing and Residential Life Jennifer Sutton said they expect 1,100 students to arrive on campus over the weekend.
“We have around 450 volunteers, but still need assistance with helping our upperclassmen return on Thursday afternoon and the Saturday afternoon shift where Olive Hall freshman arrive,” Sutton said.
Sutton said volunteers can sign up at [email protected]. The university will provide volunteers with a T-shirt and lunch.
“Unpack The Pride is a great program, and it is really what makes the move-in experience so enjoyable for the residents and their families,” Sutton said. “There’s no way we could pull this off without the volunteers.”
