UNA volleyball defeats Mississippi College in sweep

Junior middle hitter Jessica Austin attacks the ball vs. Mississippi College Oct. 1 at Flowers Hall. The Lions totaled 40 kills during the game, and limiting the Choctaws to 14.

The UNA volleyball team won a 3-0 sweep against Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College Oct. 1 in Florence.

The win against the Choctaws gives the Lions (15-1, 7-1 GSC) seven consecutive games at Flowers Hall that have ended in a sweep.

“I thought our girls were very efficient, which is nice to see,” said UNA head coach Stephanie Radecki. “They stayed focused and played really well through all three sets.”

There was never a doubt that the Lions would let the game slip from their grasp as they won each set convincingly: 25-10 in the first, 25-7 in the second and 25-12 in the third.

The Lions out-attacked the Choctaws (8-9, 1-8 GSC), totaling 40 kills to Mississippi College’s 14. Senior outside hitter Natasha Fomina led UNA with 12 kills. Senior outside hitter Peyton Lang tied for second most kills with junior middle hitter Jessica Austin with seven. Lang had six kills in the first set alone.

Sophomore setter Jayden Davila-McClary totaled 27 assists and 11 digs to complete the double-double. Davila-McClary came into the game after earning her second GSC Offensive Player of the Week award in three weeks.

Davila-McClary said she proud of how the team continued to play after amassing a large lead.

“Normally when you play a team that’s not as competitive, teams are going to play down to their level, but I think we did a really good job executing,” Davila-McClary said.

UNA begins a three game road trip at Valdosta State Oct. 7. They then travel to Pensacola, Florida, to take on West Florida Oct. 8 and to West Alabama Oct. 11.

The Lions are back at Flowers Hall Oct. 18 to face West Georgia.
