Phi Mu wows Step Show crowd

Phi Mu performs at Step Show 2014 Oct. 17. The sorority won the overall competition and the female division.

Phi Mu took home the title of 2014 Step Show overall winner of the seven organizations that competed Oct. 17.

Phi Mu was also first place in the female division, followed by Alpha Gamma Delta in second place.

The group’s theme was Phi Mu Circus, and the show included colorful costumes and fast stepping.

KeKoria Greer, Phi Mu Step Show captain, said their success was due to the team’s unity.

“Before we went out there, we were all on the same page,” Greer said. “We told our girls to do their best, step hard and put their passion into it.”

Phi Mu also received the Friend of United Way Award, which is given to the team that collects the most donations for United Way of Northwest Alabama at the door. The group received $357.61.

“In our creed, one of our lines is ‘to lend to those less fortunate a helping hand,’” Greer said. “Winning this goes hand and hand with our sorority.”

Alpha Tau Omega took home first place in the male division. Its theme was Fireproof, which showcased the participants in firemen attire.

“We brought intensity,” said Kahri Bolden, Alpha Tau Omega Step Show chairman. “Phi Mu definitely brought intensity, which is why they won first place. I feel like this year everyone just left it out on the stage.”

Second place in the male division was awarded to Phi Gama Delta.

Junior Caroline Bobo said she enjoyed the show this year more than previous years.

“There were a lot of really good story lines,” Bobo said. “Sometimes I feel like Step Show can get a little boring because there isn’t as much variation with singing and dancing as with Step Sing. But, I think everyone’s themes and stories were so different that it kept my attention the whole way through.”
