Lions sweep West Alabama for sixth straight win

The volleyball team continued its hot streak by defeating Gulf South Conference opponent the University of West Alabama 3-0 Sept. 30.

The Lions won the sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-16) to claim their sixth straight victory of the season. UNA (10-4, 8-2) continues to be a nightmare for opponents this season as it moves to 6-1 in Flowers Hall.

“The key tonight was staying in play,” said head coach Stephanie Radecki. “West Alabama is a very good team, they work hard and because of that a lot of stuff comes over (the net) that you’re not really prepared for. So you have to stay focused and execute and I think the girls did that.”

Senior hitter Megan Gorey helped lead the Lions to victory as she finished with a game-high 12 kills on the same day she was named GSC Offensive Player of the Week. She currently leads the GSC in kills with 211.

“I still looking to improve my versatility on hitting,” Gorey said. “But overall I think everyone is doing great and I’m excited to keep the winning streak going.”

Freshman hitter Megan Wadsworth finished the game with 10 kills. And junior setter Andrea De Leon paced the Lions with 34 assists and also added 11 digs.

Freshman defensive specialist and GSC Defensive Player of the Week Ashtyn Kapovich also recorded 11 digs.

“Ashtyn is just a freshman and has stepped up for us and really has just been consistent,” Radecki said.

The Lions will now look to continue their winning-streak at home against non-conference opponent Kentucky State University Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.

“They’re in our region so it will be an important game,” Radecki said. “They’re always very athletic and they’re always generally one of the best teams in their conference. They’re always very strong so it will be important for us to be focus.”
