Student describes Florence’s historical appeal

As an out-of-state freshman, I arrived in Florence not knowing what there was to do. Throughout the year I searched high and low for ways to spend my free time. I have compiled a short list of some of my favorite Shoals attractions.

One of Florence’s most peaceful attractions is Deibert Park, where relaxation is abundant. Bring homework or a book and broaden your horizons. If you enjoy exercising, try running along the paved path winding the hills around the ponds. Another aspect of the park is the Children’s Museum, offering plenty of interactive exhibits for all ages.

Helen Keller’s story is considered one of America’s greatest miracles and her home is a few miles away in Tuscumbia. Drive the short distance to visit her birthplace and see where she lived. You can view original furnishings, books and items she collected and used as a child in the late 1800s. The cottage-style house has been preserved along with its original character so you can fully experience the home in which Helen Keller grew up.

Florence is a natural phenomenon nestled in the crook of the Tennessee River. The river provides a great fishing spot for all fishermen to enjoy. There is plenty of green space perfect for sunbathing. Before heading down to the river, be sure to make a pit stop by Miami Ice, a slushie hut outside the park offering any flavor you can imagine, including flavors like Nick Saban and Michael Jackson.
