Senate votes to take expungement decision to students

The Senate branch of SGA has voted to hold a student referendum vote about expunging the Judicial branch of SGA.

The Senate Rules and Regulations Committee would oversee the duties of the Judicial branch if students voted in favor of expunging the branch.

The student referendum vote will probably be tacked onto the homecoming vote in September 2014 to increase student participation in the decision, said Vice President of Senate Nikki Messer.

The judicial branch currently oversees the conduct of SGA members. Their jurisdiction includes ruling on SGA member absence violations and the questioning of SGA members’ ethics, Messer said.

The Judicial Branch was designated to be unbiased and does not attend weekly SGA meetings with the other branches, said student senator Skyler Mansell.

“My only concern is that Judicial branch isn’t here (at meetings, so as) to stay impartial,” Mansell said. “So, I’m just afraid that might not happen if all this power is brought to Rules and Regulations and we’re all voting against or for each other.”

If students vote in favor of doing away with the Judicial branch, legislation will be brought to the floor for SGA Senators to make the final decision.
