Travel-fund bill passes with 22 affirmative votes in SGA Senate

The Senate branch of the Student Government Association passed an amendment to Bill 13-22, allowing the allocation of $200 for travel and parking expenses to 15 senators attending the Collegiate Legislative Conference at the Jan. 16 meeting.

The bill, originally proposed by Legislative Affairs Committee Chairperson Kyle Enloe, proposed that $1000 be allocated for five additional attendees and was tabled at the Jan. 9 meeting.

Because the number of attendees was not certain, it was proposed and voted that the bill be tabled until the following meeting.

The amendment was passed by a vote of 22 ayes, zero nays and one abstention.

The senate also passed Bill 14-03, submitted by Senator Brittany Leech, allowing the allocation of $180 to be paid to six delegates, who will participate in the collegiate leadership officer training, in the amount of $30 each to pay for participation.

The Senate voted down Bill 14-02, proposed by Senator Matthew Jones, which would allocate $1,445 to pay for a second charter bus to transfer 55 students to Higher Education Day in Montgomery on Feb. 27.

Enloe said that President Cale is providing the first bus at no cost to the Student Government Association.

Senators Jordan Graham and Mary-Francis Wilson were concerned with whether there would be enough attendees to fill the second bus, they said.

Senator Robby Thompson questioned the need to spend such a large amount of money for the second bus during the discussion.

The billed failed by vote of one aye, 11 nays and 11 abstentions.

It was proposed that research be done to find a less expensive means of transportation, in case there are not enough attendees to fill two buses, such as renting 12-passenger vans.

Senator Graham, chairman of the budget oversight committee, announced in his report that the committee was working on policy revisions to the Student Allocation Funding Manual, The manual lays out the guidelines for the allocation of Student Activity Fee money to campus student organizations.

SGA Treasurer Elizabeth Tyson, encouraged attendance at the SGA Fountain 5K, which will take place on Apr. 12 during her officer report.
