Women’s basketball grabs 82-79 win over UAH, men lose second game this week

Freshman Alexandra McKay and Junior Lauren Faris block their opponent from passing the ball during Saturday’s game versus University of Alabama- Huntsville.

The lady Lions stormed to an 82-79 victory over the University of Alabama- Huntsville after a close first half on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Jennifer Towne scored 35 points during the match, with 27 coming in the second half.

“When Jen gets in that zone we tell our girls (to) give her the ball and get out of her way,” said head coach Missy Tiber.

Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Jennifer Towne — who was plagued by foul trouble in the first half — started her aggressive play.

She took a team-high 20 shots and connected on 14 of them.

“Once I got past the first layer of their zone, I knew I could get what I wanted,” Towne said.

Towne’s layup with 54.9 seconds left in the contest gave UNA their first lead of the second half at 79-77.

“I told our girls that we have a great crowd tonight,” Tiber said. “If we take the lead they’ll bring the house down.”

Some clutch free throws late in the game by the Lions helped them preserve an 82-79 win.

On the men’s side, the Lions started off in an 11-0 hole and had a hard time catching up.

UAH Chargers guard Wayne Dedrick had his way with the Lions defense.

Dedrick scored 36 points on 13-21 shooting and shot 50 percent from beyond the arc while also going 5-5 from the free throw line.

“He’s one of the best guards in our league,” said head coach Bobby Champagne. “It’s hard to double him, because everybody else can make shots.”

The Lions have lost four out of five games and three in a row at home.

“You’ve got to win your home games in this league,” Champagne said. “Because road games are hard to get.”

All three of the home losses have been by three points or less.

“It seems like every time we make a run, we follow it up with a boneheaded play,” Champagne said.

The men and women’s teams will resume play Thursday, Jan. 30 at Flowers Hall, where they face conference opponent University of West Georgia.

The women are slated to tip at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
