UNA student arrested, trespassed from campus

current student was trespassed from campus on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Zach Riley was arrested and charged for terrorist threats and harassing communications, after sending what were interpreted as threatening texts messages to a faculty member, said UNA Chief of Police Bob Pastula.

Riley has been placed under summary suspension by the university after being arrested by campus police before noon on Tuesday, Pastula said.

The text messages were also interpreted as indicating a possible threat to the campus community, said Director of University Communications Terry Pace.

The student allegedly revealed his location to the faculty member in the text message, which allowed campus police to respond quickly and take the student into custody.

Upon further questioning, Riley was arrested and taken to the Lauderdale County Detention Center, Pastula said.

Pastula could not confirm whether or not Riley has been released from the detention center yet, he said.

Under summary suspension, Riley is not allowed on campus or permitted to attend university events, pending a student conduct hearing, Pace said.

Riley’s hearing may possibly involve the entire student conduct board, given the serious circumstances, said Vice President of Student Affairs David Shields.

Riley will not be summoned to appear before the board for his trial until Director of Student Conduct Kim Greenway has finished gathering information for the case. Greenway will determine the scope of the hearing once the investigation is complete, Shields said.

An email sent by Pastula on Nov. 13 also confirmed that Riley had been trespassed from campus.

“Zach Riley has been trespassed from campus,” read the email. “If you see Zach on campus or at any University function, please notify the UNA Police Department immediately.”
