Cozart named new head softball coach

Ashley Cozart, the current head softball coach for Lindsey Wilson College, will be named UNA’s new head softball coach said UNA Director of Athletics Mark Linder.

The university has not made the signing of Cozart as the new head coach official, Linder said.

Linder said that Cozart’s instant connection with the staff at UNA was what set her apart from other applicants.

Her ability to recruit and history of success are also something that stood out to the selection committee, Linder said.

“We are excited about our future,” Linder said.

He said Cozart’s history of success was an important factor contributing to her selection as the new head coach.

As a college athlete, Cozart was a four-time member of the TranSouth All-Conference softball team and ranks top-five all-time at Trevecca Nazarene University in career hits, doubles, runs batted in, home runs and batting average. She was named TranSouth Conference and NAIA region XI player of the year in 2006, according to lindseyathletics.com.

Her first collegiate coaching job was as the assistant coach at Lee University in 2008 and 2009.

Cozart has had four winning seasons at Lindsey Wilson, where she was named head coach in 2009, and has compiled a 191-45 record, after a 50-10 record last year.

She was named the Mid-South Conference coach of the year three times and led the Blue Raiders to four straight MSC regular-season conference championships and four straight conference-tournament championships.

UNA is coming off of a 40-20 record last season and made it to their first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament since 2006 and second all-time.

On June 12, the contract of former head coach Jason Anderson was terminated and the search began immediately for the new coach, officials said.
