Construction worker flown to Vanderbilt after fall

Construction on the new academic commons building continues next to Keller Hall. The construction site on campus is the location that a worker fell from the framework Friday morning.

A construction worker working on the new academic commons building on campus was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. after he was involved in an accident this morning, according to university officials.

Officials identified the worker as Stanley Baker, 43, of Ocoee, Fla. Baker fell from the frame of the building that is currently under construction and was transported to a local hospital for initial treatment, officials said.

He was later flown to Nashville, said Josh Woods, university spokesman.

Woods said all the workers onsite are tied off to the framing with safety harnesses to prevent falls.

The construction superintendent on scene said the worker was wearing his harness, but the safety cable snapped after Baker fell, Woods said.

“The good news is he is alive,” Woods said. “He had no broken bones. This could have been a lot worse.”

Officials at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville would not comment on the status of Baker, because he was not yet processed into the hospital admission system.

The academic commons building is currently being constructed on the South end of campus next to Rogers and Keller Halls. Consolidated Construction is the company overseeing the construction of the multi-million dollar project.
