Valentine’s Day: Flor-Ala Style

Flor-Ala staff members

1. “Mrs. Robinson” – Simon and Garfunkel

This one’s pretty obvious. It’s a classic love story between a boy and and an older woman. Also, it was in “The Graduate,” and it’s a great song. (Alex Lindley, news/managing editor)

2. “You and Me” – Dave Matthews Band

There’s one line that always gets me – the one that says, “And when the kids are old enough, we’re gonna teach them to fly.” (Laura Ivie, business manager)

3. “Head Over Feet” – Alanis Morissette

I picked this song because it’s how I always feel when I start to like a guy. It’s fun and exciting like a new relationship or spark of romance always is. It’s actually the song I’m finding stuck in my head a lot here lately. (Haley Wright, staff writer)

4. “Stubborn Love” – The Lumineers

Like the title implies, the song is about being stubborn in love and not giving up on someone, even when you should. I love the tone and lyrics of the song, even if it’s a bit sad for the day. (Blythe Steelman, online editor)

5. “Good Love, Bad Love” – Eddie Floyd

Because some people just need to take a day to sing about their regrets. (Elise Cofield, staff writer)

6. “It’s Not Unusual” – Tom Jones and Les Reed

Nothing makes me think of romance like the “Carlton Dance” ya know? (Pace Holdbrooks, staff writer)

7. “Starry Eyed” – Ellie Goulding

It’s a nice, happy song that always puts a smile on my face. (Ann Harkey, life editor)

8. “My Love” – Justin Timberlake and T.I.

This is one of the best songs of the past 5 years, regardless of its ability to induce slow-grind hip motions in even the most chaste of individuals. It’s one of my faves. (Pace Holdbrooks, staff writer)

9. “Favorite Color” – One Less Reason

This is my all-time favorite song! It’s kind of a song about forbidden love. “A lot of people gonna be disappointed when they find out I love you, and I need you. Til my heart stops beating, I’ll never lose this feeling.” It’s a beautiful song with an awesome vibe. (Haley Wright, staff writer)

10. “Without You” – Lana Del Rey

This song saved my life when I went through a heartbreaking week with (my boyfriend) Trent. (Ann Harkey, life editor)

11. “What a Beautiful Day” – Chris Cagle

In this song a man is just reminiscing about falling in love and telling their love story. It’s simple, sweet and heartfelt like a true love story. It makes me think of the simple lifestyle and typical relationships. (Haley Wright, staff writer)

12. “What is Love” – Haddaway

Duh. (Alex Lindley, news/managing editor)

13. “Marry Me” – Drive-By Truckers

Trent (my boyfriend) always sings this song to me when we ride around…I know, sugar overload. (Ann Harkey, life editor)

14. “Glass” – Thompson Square

I feel like this song is the perfect description of love and relationships. A relationship is a fragile thing, and it takes a lot of work. The bridge is perfect – “We might be oil and water; this could be a big mistake. We might burn like gasoline and fire, but that’s a chance we’ll have to take.” (Blythe Steelman, online editor)

15. “Jersey Girl” – Tom Waits

This is one of my favorite love songs and one of the songs that really got me into Tom Waits. He wrote it for his wife Kathleen and uses all this worn down and ugly imagery to contrast how wonderful she is in his life, and I just love that notion. (Jared McCoy, copy/opinion editor)

16. “2 Atoms In A Molecule” – Noah and the Whale

Because it’s a song about failure that makes you wanna dance. (Elise Cofield, staff writer)

17. “Into My Arms” – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

This song is similar in that feel (of “Jersey Girl”). So many Nick Cave songs are skeptical or critical of religious concepts, in an inner struggle kind of way, so I find that idea that she gives him something to believe in to be romantic even if it’s somewhat cliche. (Jared McCoy, copy/opinion editor)

18. “Collide” – Howie Day

This song is one of my favorites. It completely defined my first real relationship, and every time I hear it, I can’t help but be taken back to that place. It’s a simple, beautiful love song. (Blythe Steelman, online editor)

19. “Simple Twist of Fate” – The Format

I can’t keep away from putting up a Bob Dylan song. This is you dinner time ambience song. While it initially throws off a “hipsters only” vibe, I wouldn’t pay too much attention for that. Just get lost in the smoothness of the lyrics about a chance romantic encounter that ends less than favorably. Let it inspire you to cherish your romantic encounters. (Pace Holdbrooks, staff writer)

20. “Caring is Creepy” – The Shins

Sometimes in love, caring too much can be creepy. That makes sense, right? I don’t care. (Alex Lindley, news/managing editor)

21. “Overjoyed” – Matchbox Twenty

Matchbox Twenty is one of my favorite bands, and this is arguably the best track on their latest album. It’s all about the joy you feel when someone opens up to you and lets you into their life. There’s really no other way to describe it- “I cannot overstate it; I will be overjoyed.” (Blythe Steelman, online editor)

22. “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” – Rod Stewart

Because every healthy relationship should leave a Rod Stewart song in your head. (Elise Cofield, staff writer)
