Kilby School copes with death of student

Kilby School and UNA officials are working to help students cope with the loss of a first grader today.

Coleen Persell, 6, of Florence was killed Sunday night after she sustained injuries in an accident, university officials said.

“The day began at Kilby with a school-wide meeting… to inform the entire school community of the tragedy for ones that were not aware of it.” said UNA Spokesman Josh Woods.

Students, teachers and parents were invited to the meeting where professional counselors were on hand to help with the coping process, Woods said.

Woods said counselors would be on hand as long as needed to ensure students are supported with the loss of Persell.
