UNA senior learns to never hold back

Jonathan Hatchett, Staff Writer

Hatchett interviewed Aliyanah Daniels for this Q&A. She is a senior at the University of North Alabama, majoring in Communication Studies.

Hatchett: What is your age?

Daniels: I am 21 years old.

Hatchett: Where are you from?

Daniels: I’m from Birmingham, Alabama.

Hatchett: What do you do for fun?

Daniels: I love to learn and take part in different cultures and customs! I think cultural exchange is essential when trying to understand and respect people. Other than that, I do the typical things of hanging with friends, watching anime and playing with my dog.

Hatchett: Who are your biggest supporters?

Daniels: I would have to say my number one supporter is my dad. He’s always been there for me and even when he doesn’t fully understand why I want to do something, he ultimately loves to see me happy and will do everything he can to help me reach my goals. He is the most selfless person I know and I am so proud to be his daughter.

Hatchett: What are some important things you learned while at UNA?

Daniels: I think the most important thing I learned while being at UNA was to always be yourself in any situation you’re in. Of course, in some situations you’ll have to adjust how you present yourself, but never change your values to fit into a box. There are always people that will appreciate you for who you are; personally or in your industry of choice.

Hatchett: What would you tell your past self about what to expect before coming to UNA?

Daniels: I would tell myself to breathe. I had too many fears of coming to UNA because it was an environment full of people I was not used to. I thought I would not fit in or I wasn’t smart enough to be here, but looking back on all my years at UNA, I have accomplished so much! Having fears about a new endeavor are normal, but they should never hold you back from great opportunities so just breathe and take on each challenge as they come.

Hatchett: What will you miss about UNA?

Daniels: I’ll definitely miss my friends, but I think I’ll miss the professors the most. I have had a great support system here at UNA and even now my professors are working so hard to prepare me for the next step. Dr. Cain and Dr. Montgomery have been my biggest supporters here and I am going to miss popping into their offices just to say “Hi”.
