In honor of Women’s History Month, the University of North Alabama Police Department partnered with Housing and Residence Life to conduct a self-defense demonstration on campus, aimed at empowering students with crucial skills for personal safety.
Crime Prevention and Community Outreach Officer Shequanda Jenkins led the demonstration, drawing upon her extensive 20-year background in self-defense. The event showcased a variety of techniques designed to instill confidence in students facing unforeseen situations without relying on force.
“I’ve been doing self-defense for over 20 years, so [this event] is collectively all the things I’ve learned in 20 years that don’t have to use force-on-force to work,” said Jenkins.
The demonstration focused on Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention techniques, which included effective chokeholds and strategies to escape different types of grabs. Jenkins emphasized that these tactics are intended to stun attackers, providing victims with an opportunity to break free and seek safety. The SHARP techniques are designed for both trained members of any service and for citizens to learn basic techniques that can keep them safe.
The collaborative effort between UNA PD and Housing and Residence Life underscores a commitment to fostering a safe and supportive campus environment. By combining resources, the organizers aimed to create an educational space that encourages self-empowerment and equips students with practical tools for personal security.
As Women’s History Month unfolds, events like these contribute to a broader conversation about women’s empowerment and safety on college campuses. The self-defense demonstration serves as a tangible initiative, offering students the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the world with confidence and resilience.
In the spirit of Women’s History Month, UNA PD and Housing and Residence Life’s joint effort reflects a dedication to ensuring that students not only feel secure but are also actively engaged in their safety, promoting a culture of empowerment within the university community.
