The 30th Summer Olympics has come to a close, with athletes assimilating from all over the world to represent their country in hopes to bring home gold. These world-class athletes competed across the city of Paris in numerous disciplines to earn their place on the podium. This is Paris’s third time hosting the Olympic Games, hosting before in 1900 and 1924.
Over the month-long event, 32 different sports were organized, with a new sport – breakdancing – making its Olympic debut. 125 Olympic records were broken across 10 of these disciplines, with 32 world records being broken at the games. Overall, the United States received the most medals at 125, and tied with China for gold medals won at 40.
Outside of the competition, the viewership of the games was record-breaking, with over one million spectators tuning in to watch Olympic Basketball, and nearly one million people lining the streets for the road cycling events throughout France. In its entirety, 9.5 million tickets were sold to visitors for the 2024 Olympic games.
Paris’ take on this worldwide tradition was also the most sustainable Olympics in History, with the Olympic village using 30% less carbon to build and sustain than typical French construction.
The 2028 Olympic games will be hosted in the United States, in Los Angeles, California. This will be the third time this event has been hosted in LA, and the eighth time the Olympic games has been hosted in the U.S.
