A man from Muscle Shoals has died after a surgeon removed the wrong organ in Miramar Beach, Fla.
The man, William Bryan, was visiting a property in Destin, Fla., with his wife, Beverly, when he began experiencing pain in his side, which caused him to visit the hospital. At the hospital, his wife was told that they were recommending William to undergo surgery to remove his spleen. Despite her desire to transport him back to Alabama, she agreed to let her husband go into surgery with Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky over fears of complications from leaving the hospital.
According to a pathology report, William’s spleen was left in place, while his liver was labeled as “spleen” and removed. The removal of his liver led to him eventually bleeding out. The Bryan family’s attorney, Joe Zarzaur, says that Ms. Bryan wants the doctor to lose his license, leaving open the possibility of a lawsuit in the future. Zarzaur says this is not the first time Dr. Shaknovsky has been at fault for a wrong-site surgery, and that he had been sued for it within the past few years.
