The University of North Alabama American Sign Language Club rounded out the month of September with trivia to help raise awareness for the deaf community.
The ASL Club held a table at the Guillot University Center on Sept. 27 which featured a Deaf Community-Focused game of Jeopardy, as well as club-themed merchandise. The club held the event to celebrate the month of September as Deaf Awareness Month.
“I feel like we don’t spread enough awareness about deaf culture and deaf individuals,” said Zuleima Sanchez, Treasurer of the ASL Club. “I feel like it’s just really important to know how many people are affected by it, and how they are affected by it.”
Sanchez also said that they wanted to use the event to help celebrate their growing membership, stating that they have grown considerably during the fall semester.
Sanchez said that the University has made campus more accessible for the deaf community through Disability Support Services, but there is always room for improvement. This was affirmed by ASL Club President Breanne Bailey.
“I think it’s getting better,” said Bailey. “It’s not what it could be.”
