The first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship is arriving, and the University of North Alabama Lions have a challenge: to secure the final spot. The Division I tournament will begin Oct. 31.
Coach Chris Walker, the longest-tenured coach in the program’s history, said in an email that he isn’t sure if the team has a spot in the tournament.
“We don’t know if we have qualified for the ASUN tournament yet so we aren’t in a position to answer any questions on it,” Walker said.
In last year’s tournament, the Lions made it to the final round against Florida Gulf Coast University, the school who is currently first in the conference, and tied with a score of 3-3. After many penalty kicks were taken, the Lions fell one penalty short from the championship title.
Within the ASUN conference, UNA currently places 11 of 12 teams, with one win and nine losses. Eight teams will be playing in the championship. Each team has been given a certain amount of points based on their record, UNA has 3, FGCU has 25. Seven have already been determined.
As of right now, the Lady Lions face uncertainty by competing against Jacksonville, Stetson, Queens and West Georgia for the final spot.
