With a two win and two loss record, the end of the men’s club soccer season is approaching, with only one game left this fall. The Lions will play at home against the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga on Nov. 9.
Zach Boyett, the president of the club, describes the team’s overall performance and a player he believes stood out most this season.
“We have done very well, especially compared to last season, and are doing better in terms of making up for what we didn’t have last year,” he said. “We have a winger named Exo [Dimukayi], and he has been on fire, he’s our top goal scorer this season.
A key moment for the team was their season opener against the University of Alabama in Birmingham, where they took a 4-1 lead. Evan Lowrey, the team’s center midfielder, explained that it isn’t just the sport that keeps them together, it’s their chemistry off the field as well.
He said, “We’re kind of like a group of brothers. We come out at the end of practice and games and we’re all really close. If anybody needs anything, everyone is there for them”.
The team captain, Ryan Mukendi, switches between right defender and center defender. He spoke on the importance of people showing up to their games.
“[The fans] are our biggest strength and push us to do better. I hope every semester that we have more people watching and following us,” he said.
Lowrey also gave one last message to the fans and the community.
“Come out and support us. We don’t get a lot of people out, especially soccer, boys and girls. We are putting a lot of work in and we have quality players, just don’t undermine that,” he said.
Although the fall season is coming to an end, the Lions will soon begin the club season again for the Spring semester.
