The University of North Alabama’s Student Government Association held its second senate meeting of the spring semester on Jan. 16. During the meeting, senators discussed various in-state opportunities available for UNA students, plans after the fire in Rivers Hall, new parking regulations and the upcoming Lucky Lion Race.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Student Retention Council partnered with the SGA to present a slideshow displaying what Alabama has to offer students after graduation. The SRC hopes that this presentation will convince students to look a little closer to home when considering career and housing opportunities.
Alabama offers several careers in information technology, automotive, aerospace and agriculture industries. The slideshow also showed that a few companies interested in in-state talent include NASA, Redstone Arsenal and Airbus.
The cost of living in Alabama also ranks significantly lower than the national average, with 16% lower housing opportunities, 7% lower prices for groceries and 38% lower cost of living than the rest of the US.
Innovate Alabama has also invested in the future of many Alabamian college students. This nonprofit organization has raised over $80 million to reinvest in the lives of residents across Alabama.
After the conclusion of the slideshow, SGA discussed planning for the upcoming 5k color run and the city’s upcoming plans for West Hawthorne St.
SGA also welcomed five new senators to two committees. These senators are Anna Gottman and Damari Moore on the Committee of Academic Affairs, and Alanis Armstead, Erica Strickland and Morgan Vincent on the Committee of Student Welfare.
SGA meets weekly on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. All UNA students are welcome to attend.
