The University of North Alabama’s Norton Auditorium hosted 90’s country music star Pam Tillis for a concert on Sunday, Jan. 21. Bluegrass group Dailey and Vincent opened the show with a set of their own.
Tillis’ set, sponsored by the Shoals Scholar Dollars Foundation, included several of her biggest songs, like “Don’t Tell Me What To Do” and “Maybe It Was Memphis.” Her set also included several song covers from prominent stars like Dolly Parton.
“I’ve been doing this so long, I’ve done bell bottoms three times,” said Tillis, regarding her veteran music career. “I’m proud to be called a 90s Country artist, because 90s Country is hot.”
Tillis also honored her late father and also country star, Mel Tillis, during her set, saying, “I’m honored to carry on a family tradition.”
Dailey and Vincent’s opening set included a number of their most successful songs in the bluegrass and southern gospel genres. The group displayed the vocal and instrumental talents of all of their members. The voices of Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent (the group’s frontmen), as well as Wesley Smith and Aaron McCune harmonized several times without instrumentals, with McCune’s low voice powerfully cutting through the mix.
Audience members were impressed with Tillis’s performance, remarking about her ability to perform so well after such a long career. One fan remarked that the most notable moments of the show was Tillis’s tribute songs to both her father and Dolly Parton.
