UNA’s Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre will be performing the production “Gruesome Playground Injuries” from Feb. 14 through Feb. 16. Tickets can be bought online.
This play is a story about the lives of two star-crossed lovers that continue to meet throughout the next 30 years of their lives. They are both learning how to deal with the challenges of life as they are brought together by injury, heartbreak and their own self-destructive tendencies.
“It’s a beautiful story about the power of soulmates and how that label can fluctuate between romantic and platonic, but always draw two people back to each other,” said Marty Loring.
The production will feature only two characters: Doug and Kayleen. Taz Whaley will be performing the role of Doug, and Marty Loring will be performing the role of Kayleen.
Loring states that this play is “real and raw.” These themes may make it difficult for some viewers, but that is why she believes it is important to watch.
“People tend to go to theatres to escape from reality, but this show is not an escape from it, rather it is a way to cope with the tragedies we face in real life,” said Loring.
The cast describes the production process as intimate, with only having four people at rehearsals every night. They both state that they have deeply bonded with everyone a part of this production.
“Overall, the whole thing has just been very comforting”, said Whaley. “This group has done a fantastic job, and it feels so honest.”
Loring said that she loves playing Kayleen and expresses the deep feelings she holds with her character.
“I want to protect her and make her feel loved in a way that she can’t feel most of the time,” said Whaley.
Whaley thanked UNA’s School of the Arts when she said, “This kind of place brings a sense of community and comfort that is invaluable to students.”
