It is that time of year again when the curtain calls on student groups to gather together for a night of fun, entertainment and charity raising.
Hosted by the University Program Council, Step Sing is a UNA campus tradition every student can enjoy. Student groups perform shows that they choreograph with song, all in a competition to raise money for charity.
Step Sing will take place on the evenings of Feb. 6 through Feb. 8 in Norton Auditorium. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m.
The show on Feb. 6 is closed for UNA students and employees, while Feb. 7 and 8 performances are open to the public and cost $15.
The winners will be announced to the audience on Feb. 8’s show. This year’s theme is Once Upon A Step Sing and the charity is Caring for The Pride.
The groups involved in this year’s Step Sing are the Honors Student Organization, Baptist Campus Ministries, Lambda Sigma Phi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha.
Each group has ten minutes to perform and is allowed twenty-five minutes sometime the week before to practice on stage for a full-out dress rehearsal.
Groups can use any song they would like as long as it does not contain explicit lyrics, and each song can only be used once per show. Groups can also use props on stage as long as they adhere to the Step Sing rules and regulations as posted on the UNA website. Groups can also meet with the Assistant Technical Director of Norton to practice lighting cues for the show.
“My favorite thing about Step Sing is definitely student involvement because it results in such a great turnout of people who care about what they’re watching,” said Omarie Bartee, the student head of this year’s Step Sing.
