As the crowd gathered in, Norton Auditorium radiated with excitement in anticipation of UPC’s annual Step-Sing on the weekend of Feb 6-8. This year’s theme was “Once Upon a Step-Sing, where groups took the audience through magical adaptations of classic fairy tales. The hosts for this year were UNA Hype Man Brody Gravitt and Mistress of Ceremonies Caroline Coleman.
To kick off the night, the Honor Student Organization presented the crowd with “Snow White: A Tale of Two Teams”. Inspired by the Honor Student Organization’s annual tag game called Zombie Week with a classic Snow White twist. The show included songs like “A Million Dreams” from the movie The Greatest Showman, “Thriller” by Micheal Jackson and “Seven Nation Army” by White Stripes.
Up next were the brothers of Lambda Sigma Phi with their show called “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road”. The show was about a freshman in college trying to fit in, meeting characters from “The Land of Oz”. Some songs included were “Sweet Escape” by Gwen Stefani, “Footloose” from the movie Footloose and “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO.
Right after, the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha took the stage with their show called “Peter Pan: Never Is a Really Long Time.” During the show, a high school graduate debated whether or not it’s better to never grow up with the help of characters from Peter Pan. A few songs included were “Rocketeer” by Far East Movement, “Beat It” by Micheal Jackson and “Ain’t It Fun” by Paramore.
To continue with the women’s division, the sisters of Alpha Delta Phi took the stage with “Quasi-Spy: Diamonds Are Forever”. Where the villains and princesses of Disney fought to keep the ADPI diamond. Some songs included were “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain, “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish and “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” by Marilyn Monroe.
Next up were the sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta with “Alpha Gam in Wonderland”. The main character was a college freshman excited and nervous for their first day of college. She learns to brace the unknown with the characters of Alice in Wonderland. Songs included were “One Way or Another” by Blondie, “Creep” by Radiohead and “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence & The Machine.
Right after was the Baptist Campus Ministries with “The Tangled Tales of Three”. The characters of Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella get mixed up and it’s up to them to fix it. A few songs included were “Maneater” by Daryl Hall & John Oates, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar and “Do You Believe in Magic” by The Lovin’ Spoonful.
Up next were the sisters of Phi Mu who took the stage with their show “Shrek”. Bringing the story and characters of Shrek to life, songs included were “Whatta Man” by Salt-N-Pepa, “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar and “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees.
Next up were the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta with their adaptation of “Humpty Dumpty”. Humpty Dumpty navigated his first frat party while he’s not the biggest party guy. Some songs included were “Tonight Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” by Katy Perry and “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus.
Phi Gamma Delta brother Tanner Whealton said his favorite part of Step-Sing was “after the performance, going back to the fraternity house and celebrating our hard work.”
To close out the show were the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha with their show called “Bedtime Stories”. Where they put a twist on classic bedtime stories such as The Three Little Pigs, The Ugly Duckling and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. A few songs included were “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan, “Brick House” by Commodores and “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
Pi Kappa Alpha brother Trace Waker gave insight on the brother’s hard work.
He said, “The dancers and I have spent 18-20 hours a week this past month learning and working on the dances and our coaches have spent 35+ hours a week working on props, choreography and reviewing and refining every part of our show.”
The overall winner of Step-Sing 2025 was Alpha Gamma Delta. With the first-place winner in the co-ed division being Baptist Campus Ministries, the first-place winner in the women’s division being Phi Mu and the first-place winner in the men’s division was Pi Kappa Alpha.
