Sponsored by the Office of General Counsel at UNA, the special oral argument session will be a live court proceeding held in the Gulliot University Center for students, faculty and staff to watch.
“Oral arguments provide a rare opportunity to witness the judicial process in action, as attorneys present their cases before the justices. These proceedings focus on legal principles, case law, and the interpretation of constitutional and statutory provisions,” said the office.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to see how Alabamab’s highest court system works. The event will be in the GUC on Wednesday, April 2 at 9:45am.
The court has done this in the past, hosting sessions at four other colleges in Alabama. The most recent at Jacksonville State University in September of 2024, covering Griggs v. NHS Management. Then in March 2024 at Auburn Universtiy, covering Ex parte Jackson Hospital & Clinic, Inc. In September of 2023 at the Universtiy of South Alabama, covering James LePage and Emily LePage, individually and as parents and next friends of two deceased LePage embryos, Embryo A and Embryo B; and William Tripp Fonde and Caroline Fonde,individually and as parents and next friends of two deceased Fonde embryos, Embryo C and Embryo D v. The Center for Reproductive Medicine, P.C., and Mobile Infirmary Association d/b/a Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. Then the earliest at the University of Alabama School of Law, covering Springhill Hospitals, Inc. v. West.
The office of General Counsel is the office that promotes “supporting and advancing the university’s mission, goals and growth.” The office says the enforce this by: “Promoting a climate of ethical behavior, integrity and accountability; Providing timely, creative, and practical legal advice and problem-solving; Providing education about legal requirements and risks to prevent or reduce liabilities and legal disputes; Reviewing and revising contracts and other legal documents; Serving as the point of contact for all interaction with outside counsel; and Facilitating the development and implementation of university initiatives.”
