Students at the University of North Alabama will have scholarship opportunities by participating in a mixed doubles tennis match.
Hosted by Lion PR student organization, this event allows students to fundraise for student scholarships, research opportunities and experiential learning.
The money goes through the Tosha-Paige Whitten Lion PR Foundation, founded in 2022. Whitten is a lecturer and alum of UNA and wanted to create, along with fellow lecturer Betsy Heckert, an environment where students were able to engage in experiential learning opportunities.
“The reason why I wanted to do this is because it’s mine–and Miss Heckert’s–goal to graduate practically proficient professionals in the public relations industry,” Whitten said.
The event will be sectioned off by bracket play, featuring mixed doubles teams. All skills are welcomed and encouraged to join. Whitten teases that there will be big competitors participating.
She explained that the idea for a tennis matchup came from her combining her favorite sport with her favorite people and was excited that her students had volunteered for the event.
A miniature event will be held within the tennis match. Whitten will participate in “Pie the Professor.” She will attempt a first serve, and if she misses the service box, her students will have the opportunity to pie the lecturer.
This event will take place on April 26, from 8am to 1pm, at Cox Creek Tennis Courts.
