The coordinator for the Education Abroad & International Exchange programs hosted an event with the UNA Police Department to teach students how to perform CPR and use an AED. This two-part event gives students the opportunity to get CPR-certified right here at UNA.
“I think it’s so important because a lot of times, even growing up, I wanted to know things that were going to be relevant to my life, not just in school,” said Alexandria Buttgereit, the coordinator. “Having life-saving skills, financial literacy, and other practical knowledge is something I believe education should offer.”
The event, designed to provide practical knowledge applicable beyond the classroom, emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness both at home and abroad.
The seminar focused on equipping students with skills that are useful in a variety of situations, whether they are traveling internationally or simply engaging in everyday activities. By learning CPR, students are empowered to act in emergency situations, potentially saving lives.
The initiative is part of UNA’s broader efforts to enhance student learning experiences and prepare them for real-life challenges. As the university continues to host events like this, it encourages students to take advantage of these opportunities while they are readily available.
“I hope students continue to see the value in what UNA tries to provide through different events like this,” Buttgereit said. “College is a time for learning and growth, and these kinds of opportunities may not always be as accessible after graduation.”
The seminar was well received, with students appreciating the chance to acquire such an essential skill free of charge. By participating in the event, attendees walked away with knowledge that could one day make a critical difference in someone’s life. UNA’s dedication to holistic education continues to set it apart as a university that prepares students not just academically, but for real-world situations as well.
