UNA music faculty showcased their skills at a faculty recital on April 1.
Dr. Kelsey Paquin, accompanied by Dr. Meghan Merciers, Dr. Tim Harris and Dr. William Hueholt, performed at the UNA School of Arts Department of Music Faculty Recital, centered around clarinet instrumental pieces.
“[I’ve been playing for] more than 25 years,” Paquin said. “I’ve been teaching here at UNA for three years now.”
Much work and research went into finding and performing the chosen pieces. The first piece performed was Canción para una Clarinetista by Javier Zalba, with Paquin on clarinet and Hueholt on piano.
The second piece performed was Six Duettos by Fernande Decruck, with Paquin and Merciers on clarinet. Many of Decruck’s clarinet pieces consisted of unpublished manuscripts and no recordings.
The third piece performed was Delaytudes by Christopher Mothersole, with Paquin on clarinet. The fourth piece performed was Year of the Dragon by Daixuan Ai, with Paquin on clarinet and Harris on saxophone. This piece was inspired by the Chinese Zodiac calendar in the year of the dragon.
The fifth piece performed was Recuiellement by Fernande Decruck, with Paquin on clarinet and Hueholt on piano. This piece also had no prior recordings and the measures on the manuscript for the clarinet seemed to be out of order due to the notes on said manuscript.
The sixth piece performed was Awakening by Sarah Feigin with Paquin and Merciers on clarinet and Hueholt on piano. This last piece also did not have any prior recordings.
“I hope students are exposed to different music that they didn’t know before coming here,” Paquin said. “I hope they are exposed to good playing and use that as a guide for their playing.”
