UNA football game at Florida Tech canceled
October 5, 2016
UNA football’s game vs. Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida, Oct. 8 is cancelled, per an email sent out from UNA Sports Information.
The move comes in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew making landfall in Florida in the coming days.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone at Florida Tech and everyone in the path of this storm,” said UNA Director of Athletics Mark Linder in a press release. “We explored every option as far as playing the game at an alternate site or alternate date but neither of those would work.”
Florida Tech announced it is cancelling classes and athletic events Oct. 5-11.
Linder said both schools explored all options to play the game at a neutral site or at a later date, but could not reschedule.
The cancelled game has major implications for both football programs, as both are ranked in the AFCA standings and, sit atop the Gulf South Conference standings.
The NCAA requires teams must play at least 10 games to be eligible for the Division II Playoffs.
Linder said UNA would file a waiver with the NCAA regarding these circumstances immediately.
