Football and soccer teams add recruits

Various coaches from the UNA athletic department patiently awaited letters of intent during National Signing Day Feb. 3.

The football and soccer teams added another group of signees to their respective rosters in hope of finding present and future contributors.

The football team added 15 players to its roster, including nine freshmen and six transfers, according to a press release from UNA’s sports information department. The group includes six offensive lineman and four defensive backs.

“It’s great to bring young men into our program that fit what we want from an academic standpoint and an athletic standpoint,” said UNA football coach Bobby Wallace. “This year, it looks like we’re going to have about half and half high school players and transfers.”

Wallace said he expects some of the players from the class to compete for starting roles immediately.

“We have what we think are some impact players,” he said. “When I say that, I mean players we expect to come in and play right away. Most of those are the transfers, but there might be a high school player or two (in that group).”

The soccer team expects to add eight players to its roster.

“We had a great group of girls signing today,” said UNA soccer coach Chris Walker. “We have a great returning class, and these new players that have signed on today will only add to that and make us more competitive the next four years.”

Walker said the 2016 soccer signing class is balanced position-wise.

“There are a lot of attacking players, a lot of defenders, midfielders,” Walker said. “It’s a good mixture of players. We have a goalkeeper (coming in) as well. We are super excited about moving forward.”
