Senate members express intentions to propose $23 fee increase
March 14, 2014
Students concerned about the rising cost of tuition may be concerned with potential increases occurring in the next two years.
The Student Government Association Senate Budget Oversight Committee announced they will proposing an increase to the student activity fee. A resolution will be brought to the Senate floor April 3 proposing a $23 increase to the Student Activity Fee by Spring 2016.
The activity fee is currently $27. The proposed legislation would raise the fee by $8 in Fall 2014 and by $5 for the three following semesters to cap out at $50.
The Budget Oversight Committee has modeled the proposed increase around the activity fees of universities similar in size to UNA, said Budget Oversight Committee Chairperson Jordan Graham.
“We’ve done extensive research of Division I and Division II schools with about the same number of students as UNA, and we think $50 is a reasonable amount,” Graham said.
Graham said the purpose of raising the fee is to allow the university to grow and attract more potential students by providing better programming and activities for students.
He encouraged senators to present all of the information to students and seek their feedback before a resolution is brought to the floor for a vote.
