Pritchard propels Lions to victory over Union
February 5, 2014
For the third time this season the Lions posted triple figures en-route to a 100-58 victory over the Union Bulldogs.
“I think Union is a good basketball team,” said head coach Bobby Champagne. “They caught us on a good night for us and a bad night for them.”
Both teams got off to a slow start Tuesday evening with only eight points being scored in opening four minutes of play.
The pace picked up and the Lions held a 19-15 lead with 11:53 remaining in the first half.
It was all UNA from that point forward as the Lions went on an 18-0 run to extend the lead to 37-15.
Tyler Pritchard ignited the run with three 3-point field goals in as many possessions.
“We were boxing out and playing defense tonight,” Pritchard said. “That always leads to open shots and I knocked them down tonight.”
Pritchard led all scorers with 22 points.
“We had a little lull in the first half,” Champagne said. “But Tyler got us out of that with his three point shots.”
UNA carried a 43-25 lead into the half.
The Lions quickly extended the lead behind another 18-0 run.
“The only negative I can find tonight was that we missed 10 free throws.” Champagne said.
UNA finished the game going 19-29 from the charity stripe.
Rashuan Claiborne added 17 points, 11 rebounds and two steals for the Lions.
“His (Claiborne) mama was watching tonight and he didn’t want to disappoint her,” Champagne said.
After winning back-to-back games, the Lions will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to play conference opponent Lee University on Thursday night. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
