The UNA women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 75-63 victory over the University of West Alabama.

Sophomore guard Janae Lyde got her first start of the season and took advantage of the opportunity by scoring 13 points and dishing out six assists.

“Scoring is something I’m capable of, but I’d rather get my teammates involved and get them the open shot,” Lyde said. “I told my shooters if I can find you and you’re open don’t hesitate to shoot it.”

Lyde has stepped up this season, said head coach Missy Tiber.

“I just thought it was time for Janae,” Tiber said. “She’s been very positive and been a great team leader in practices. She has really been trying to get us turned around.”

After a close first half , where UNA led 34-31 at the break, the Lions pulled away in the second half. UNA shot 57 percent from the field in the second half.

“I think we put too much pressure on ourselves in the first half,” Tiber said. “We settled down in the second half, made some adjustments, pressed a little bit, changed our offense a little bit and were able to score some points.”

All five starters scored double digits, led by Nichelle Fillmore and Jennifer Towne’s 15 points apiece.

“We’re 8-1 now when we score 70 plus points,” Tiber said. “We may not have done everything defensively that I wanted, but when you can put some points up you’re going to give yourselves a much better chance to win.”
