The new year is finally here, and along with it will come varied new content on the TV and movie streaming giant: Netflix. Over 100 shows and movies will be available in January alone. Of course, some must go, but not all is lost. Here are a handful of great new options on Netflix this year per the Hollywood Reporter.

            Fans of the Netflix original “Grace and Frankie” may be happy to receive a sixth season in just one more week, while fans of “Good Girls” will be able to watch season two of the NBC drama. 

            Viewers who loved the original series “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” were previously skeptical of the Netflix adaptation “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” However, it has proven to be well-received and quite successful. Season 3 will premiere at the end of the month. 

            A documentary which isn’t new, but is certainly respected and acclaimed, will also be added to Netflix’s collection. Viewers can enjoy “Betty White: First Lady of Television,” which covers the highlights and achievements of Betty White, an American TV icon.

            For fans of classic comedy, “The Original Kings of Comedy” may be a great selection for one of those well-needed, hearty laughs at the end of a long and stressful day. This 2000 film directed by the great Spike Lee features true comedy kings like Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley and the late Bernie Mac. 

UNA junior Sydney McDonald is looking forward to watching “Instant Hotel” season three, “Disenchantment” season three, as well as Netflix originals like “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Mr. Iglesias.” “These shows are so good and fun to watch,” McDonald said. “Netflix has gotten better with original shows.”

            An entertainment selection is not complete without a little adventure. On January 1st, Netflix added two films from “The Lord of the Rings”: “The Return of the King” and “The Two Towers.”

            UNA senior Brandon Blevins said that he is really excited about these additions. “I’m a huge fan of the books and movies,” Blevins said. However, he added that he is upset that “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” which is a prequel to the 1982 movie, is being removed. “This move just kind of seems a little weird to me,” said Blevins.

            Movie lovers will have a wide selection to choose from with films such as “Inception,” Tyler Perry’s “A Fall From Grace,” “Hitch,” “Shrek Forever After” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie.”

            Unfortunately, for fans of classics like “Friends” and “Frasier”, these shows have ended their stay on Netflix for now. Fans of NBC’s “The Office” have until the end of 2020 before it too will leave Netflix and only be available for streaming on NBC’s own streaming platform.

            According to whats-on-netflix.com, several fan favorites including “American Psycho,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Christopher Robin,” “Pulp Fiction” and “The Incredibles 2” will also only be available for a few more months. 

            While some Netflix subscribers are not at all pleased with these removals, UNA senior Alexa Cortes remains hopeful. “I’m excited about season two of “You,” “Final Destination,” “Willy Wonka”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” Cortes said. “I’m not sad about “The Office” or “Friends” leaving since it’s been on there for a bit, and we need some new stuff to binge-watch.”
